The player has a total of 5 cards (5 attacks) for most situations, randomly generated. The fighting system is based on a variety of symbols, numbers (represented by dots), and the card itself.

Grand Elder Guru appears on Namek powering up all characters in the party. Master Roshi only appears once to support the players against Raditz. If the player sacrifices an ally to make Goku become Super Saiyan, and keeps Goku alive for the fight, a Super Saiyan Vegeta encounters the group for a secret final battle after the end of the credit role.īulma also joins the crew for most of the game, providing a place to rest while on Earth and Namek. Frieza is randomly encountered in his 3rd form, and during his 4th form, he can "power up" to his maximum. After defeating his 2nd form, he runs away protected by Ginyu Force Recolors. Frieza is fought several times, first as a Black Saibaman clone. Depending on which one you kill the other runs away and brings back Ginyu. Guldo and Recoome fight as a pair as well as Jeice and Burter. After they are defeated, Cui, Dodoria, Zarbon, and the Ginyu Force all get two re-colors as individual enemies that are roughly half as strong as their originals.īosses in the game include: Raditz (Black Saibaman double), Raditz, Green Saibaman and Nappa, King Kai, Vegeta, Cui (can be fought before encountering Frieza for the first time, or fought after collecting the cave Dragon Ball), Dodoria, and Zarbon in both forms. Playable characters consist of (in order), Goku, Piccolo, Gohan, Krillin, Yamcha, Tien Shinhan, Chiaotzu, Dende, two Namek warriors (Maima and Tsumuri), Vegeta, Nail, and Captain Ginyu (through exchange body). There is some real potential to develop something magnificent for the DBZ franchise using Battle of Z as a framework.The game follows the rough outline of the Vageta, Namek, and Frieza Saga, with various add-ons and edits to make the story fit within the RPG guidelines, such as the inclusion of multi-colored Saibamen and re-colors of Freiza's henchmen and the Ginyu Force members as common enemies. Outside of that - the visuals are great, the stories are much the same, and the interfaces are excellent. The combat needs some refinement in every respect. Often you will find yourself getting angry at things not quite panning out the way you plan, and end up in defeats beyond your control. A Welcome Frontier That Could Use Some Workīold and brave development alone can't make a game great, but there is a lot to take from Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z - and that is something to celebrate. But there is a lot of room for fine-tuning. It's a magnificent attempt at making something fresh with all the options available. The buttons are clunky and not entirely responsive, where executing moves becomes frustrating. As an action game, the mechanics prevent the freedom to apply abilities towards their targeted foes wherever they see fit - but controlling your characters mounts a challenge. The combat in Battle of Z, however, is where things start to get a bit shaky. The strategies and preparedness that can be implemented add a bit of zen-like valor to an already intense fight. The freedom offered in the battle mechanics is refreshing - with RPG elements such as upgrades and consumables available to apply in each vast battle.
More admirable features an expansive roster of characters numbering up to 70, with 8 players that can battle simultaneously. There are more enemies present, different combat forced to achieve goals, and a hell of a lot of Dragon Ball Z packed into the offering. The most welcome changes being the battlegrounds being an open world where player fully controls where they go and what they do. Dragon Ball Z: Battle for Z ditches the traditional side-scrolling, two opponent fighters in favor of an action-RPG style game.
